California: Governor Newsom announces judicial appointments 10.31.2025

~ SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has made three judicial appointments, filling vacancies in the Monterey, Sacramento, and Stanislaus County Superior Courts. These appointments were announced on October 31, 2025.
In Monterey County, Brian Jones has been appointed as a Judge in the Superior Court. Jones brings a wealth of experience to the bench, having served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Monterey County District Attorney's Office since 2013. He also worked as an instructor at the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training from 2022 to 2025. Jones holds a Juris Doctor degree from Monterey College of Law and is a Democrat. He will be filling the vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Marla O. Anderson.
Jose Olivera, from Yolo County, has been appointed as a Judge in the Sacramento County Superior Court. Olivera's impressive legal career includes working as a Director & Associate General Counsel at Meta Platforms, Incorporated since 2019 and serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California from 2014 to 2019. He also served as a Trial Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice from 2011 to 2014. Olivera received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law and is a Democrat. He will be filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Andre K. Campbell.

In Stanislaus County, Clifford Tong has been appointed as a Judge in the Superior Court. Tong brings extensive experience in public defense to his new role, having served as Chief Deputy Alternate Defender at the Stanislaus County Alternate Defender's Office since 2022 and previously working as Chief Deputy Public Defender at the Stanislaus County Public Defender's Office from 2021 to 2022 and as a Deputy Public Defender from 2007 to 2021. Tong holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law and is a Democrat. He will be filling the vacancy left by the passing of Judge Nancy A. Leo.
These appointments come at a time when California is facing economic challenges due to the reckless decisions made by the Trump Administration. Governor Newsom has been vocal about his concerns for the state's economy and has taken action to mitigate its impact. In addition to these judicial appointments, he also recently appointed Monica Erickson as Director of the California Department of Human Resources.

In other news, California continues to use its expertise in disaster response by deploying 34 highly trained search and rescue personnel to Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa. This deployment was made at the Governor's direction and showcases California's commitment to helping communities in need.
