Georgia: Gov. and First Lady Kemp Lead Economic Mission to Panama

ATLANTA ~ Atlanta, GA - Governor Brian P. Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp are currently leading an economic development mission to Panama this week. The focus of their trip is on logistics infrastructure and supply chain operations at the Panama Canal. They are joined by representatives from the Georgia Ports Authority and Georgia Department of Economic Development.

According to Governor Kemp, Georgia's ports play a crucial role in the state's economy, supporting over 650,000 jobs both directly and indirectly. He also highlighted that the ports are among the fastest-growing in the United States. The Panama Canal serves as a vital link for shipping routes with some of Georgia's top business partners in Savannah and Brunswick. The governor expressed his excitement about learning more about their operations as well as continuing to invest in infrastructure within the state.

Griff Lynch, President and CEO of Georgia Ports Authority, stated that they are one of the top trading partners with the Panama Canal. He believes that this trip will further strengthen their relationship with Panama.

Georgia is ranked sixth in the United States for trade value, facilitating over $198.7 billion in trade to 222 countries and territories in 2024 alone. The ports of Savannah and Brunswick play a significant role in this trade. The Port of Savannah is well-connected to world markets with 35 ship calls per week, 42 doublestack trains per week, and 14,000 truck gate moves daily. On the other hand, the Port of Brunswick is known as the top U.S. roll-on/roll-off port for automotive and machinery logistics. It has recently undergone upgrades worth $262 million, with a new $100 million fourth berth currently under construction.

Pat Wilson, Commissioner of Georgia Department of Economic Development, emphasized on how connectivity drives business growth. He stated that the Panama Canal is a crucial link in Georgia's global network and plays a significant role in fueling investment opportunities, creating jobs, and keeping Georgia competitive on a global scale. Wilson also highlighted that the combination of connectivity, skilled workforce, and pro-business environment makes Georgia an attractive destination for companies to invest and grow.

The economic development mission to Panama led by Governor Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp is expected to further strengthen the relationship between Georgia and Panama, leading to more opportunities for trade and investment in the future.
