APALACHICOLA, Fla. ~ On September 17th, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida celebrated the 238th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution by unveiling a new statue of Benjamin Franklin in Franklin County. This statue, honoring one of America's most influential founding fathers, is the latest feature in Florida's America250 commemorations.
During the unveiling ceremony, Governor DeSantis spoke about Franklin's significant role in the founding of the nation and his impact on American history. "Benjamin Franklin was an American original," said Governor DeSantis. "We as Americans are fortunate to have had a man like Franklin playing such a big role in our nation's founding." He also emphasized the importance of remembering and upholding the values and principles that inspired our founders as we approach America's 250th anniversary next July.
Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins also spoke at the event, highlighting Franklin's wisdom, courage, and vision that continue to shape America today. "Here in Florida, we take pride in our constitutional legacy," said Lieutenant Governor Collins. "Franklin's life reminds us that freedom is not inherited by chance but secured through civic responsibility and service."

The unveiling of this statue marks the second in a series planned across Florida counties named after America's founders. Statues will also be installed in Washington, Hamilton, Madison, and Monroe Counties over the next year. Earlier this year, a statue of Thomas Jefferson was unveiled in Jefferson County.
Governor DeSantis praised Benjamin Franklin as an embodiment of American ingenuity and highlighted his commitment to civic duty. He also stressed the importance of civic education and its role in preserving our republic system of government.
Under Governor DeSantis' leadership, Florida has made significant investments in civic education. In 2021, he signed legislation establishing the Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative with a budget of $129 million. This program has expanded civics curriculum at all grade levels and created a Civics Seal of Excellence Endorsement for Florida teachers. Over 21,000 teachers have participated in the program, with thousands more on the waitlist. The state has also awarded nearly $60 million in teacher stipends to recognize their dedication to fostering civic literacy.
In addition, Florida's Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget includes an additional $7.4 million to further expand civic literacy and debate programs across the state.
