Mesa's Gateway Library Wins Prestigious International Design Award
TelAve News/10898272
~ Mesa's newest library, Gateway Library, has been recognized for its exceptional interior design by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Library Association (ALA). The biennial IIDA/ALA competition celebrates outstanding library interior design and showcases innovative concepts in nine different categories.
Located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway in southeast Mesa, Gateway Library was selected as one of two winners in the "Public Libraries-30,000 Square Feet and Under" category. A panel of experts in interior design and library services evaluated all entries.
Polly Bonnett, Director of Mesa Public Library, expressed her gratitude for the prestigious award. "We are honored to receive this recognition and proud to have such a stunning library in Mesa," she said. "Not only does it make a visual impact, but its innovative design allows us to provide forward-thinking library services that will benefit generations to come."

The impressive design of Gateway Library was a collaboration between Richrd Kennedy Architects and White Baux Studio Interior Design. As Mesa's first new full-service library in 30 years, the state-of-the-art facility spans approximately 28,000 square feet and boasts an open concept with rows of books and other materials under a high wooden ceiling. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the space. The library also features a multi-purpose room, THINKspot collaborative workspace, makerspace, and designated areas for adult, teen, and children's resources. Additionally, there is a digital art display wall, outdoor reading patio, and plaza for community events.
The Gateway Library project will be formally recognized at the annual ALA conference in Chicago later this month. The library officially opened its doors on December 6th, 2025. Funding for the project came from both the 2018 General Obligation Bond approved by voters and construction sales tax. Willmeng Construction was responsible for building the award-winning facility.
The winning projects, including Gateway Library, will be highlighted in an upcoming issue of American Libraries Magazine and on IIDA.org. This recognition further solidifies Gateway Library's status as a cutting-edge and visually stunning addition to the Mesa community.
