The Woodlands at Furman Celebrates 10th Anniversary
TelAve News/10569257
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Feb. 11, 2019 - TelAve -- The Woodlands at Furman is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this month. Upstate South Carolina's only locally-owned, nonprofit Life Care community opened in 2009.
The Woodlands at Furman occupies 22 acres adjacent to Furman University. Fewer than 20 residents lived at the community when it first opened.
From the beginning, however, The Woodlands has always maintained a "small hometown community feeling," according to Angela Hecker, Director of Sales and Marketing.
"You feel like you're in the country, surrounded by trees and blue skies, but you're minutes away from great music, history, art, and food in Travelers Rest and downtown Greenville," Hecker said. "Residents look after one other and enjoy each other's company, whether they're sharing a glass of wine at happy hour or listening to a Furman University trio play music after dinner."
Residents have always enjoyed the benefits of living beside Furman University. They receive discounts to Furman's athletic and cultural events and continue learning by taking classes in the OLLI program.

The biggest change at The Woodlands over the last 10 years has been the addition of the villas.
"Life Care, our affiliation with Furman, and the philosophy of body-mind-spirit-social fulfillment as a quality of life have always been a part of the community," Hecker said, "but the villas were just a dream that finally became a reality."
The Woodlands started construction on 28 new villa homes in the Fall of 2018. The homes are located on the southern end of The Woodlands campus. Twelve are on the 17th tee of the Furman University Golf Course.
The 2300- to 2900-square foot homes offer residents independent living with direct access to amenities, services, and higher levels of care. Each villa includes a breakfast room, garage, golf cart, outdoor terrace, study or guest room, and walk-in closets.
While these amenities make life at The Woodlands more enjoyable, residents often say they're more thankful for their fellow residents and the staff members at The Woodlands.

"The best thing about our move to The Woodlands is the people," Tom Dowell said. "Most of the residents go out of their way to make us feel welcome. The entire staff really make an effort to meet the needs of each resident.
"The wonderful people here have made our lives even richer."
