ACC STL Commemorates Juneteenth with Fireside Chat Featured Dred Scott Descendant Lynne Jackson
TelAve News/10867645
ST. LOUIS - TelAve -- The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) St. Louis Chapter's Diversity & Inclusion Committee hosted a profoundly impactful Fireside Chat on June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. The well-attended event featured Lynne Jackson, the great-great-granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott, offering members a unique opportunity to connect historical civil rights struggles with contemporary legal practice.
Jackson brought the compelling story of the Scott family to life through a rich display of artifacts and photographs. Her presentation delved beyond the legal intricacies of the Dred Scott litigation, offering a personal glimpse into the lives of Dred and Harriet Scott—their aspirations, dreams, and unwavering resolve to secure freedom for themselves and their children.
A particularly poignant aspect of Jackson's discussion was her portrayal of the Blow family, who owned Dred Scott and later Harriet and their children. Breaking from stereotypical narratives, Jackson highlighted how the Blow family instilled a sense of dignity for all people. Remarkably, they later supported the Scotts' legal battles and assisted in securing their freedom bonds upon their release.

Jackson's dedication extends far beyond preserving her family's legacy. She is a tireless advocate for reconciliation, actively connecting with descendants of the Blow family and other significant historical figures, including those of Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Nat Turner, and even the Supreme Court justices who issued dissenting opinions in the Dred Scott case—opinions that championed the rights of Dred, Harriet, and Black Americans.
"Lynne's presentation was a powerful reminder of how litigation and judicial decisions can have profound impacts on fundamental freedoms and human dignity," said David Hartung, Vice President of the Chapter's D&I Committee. "As in-house counsel, we witnessed firsthand how the law can either perpetuate injustice or serve as a tool for progress. Her work on reconciliation shows us that healing and understanding are possible, even across the most difficult historical divides."
