TelAve News/10899015
~ The City of Boston is taking steps to ensure that its residents have access to fresh and healthy food options. The city has recently announced the opening of applications for the Boston Farmers Market Coupon Program, which will provide eligible residents with $25 per month to spend on fresh produce and other healthy food items. This initiative aims to not only support local farms but also expand food access to those who may need help affording groceries.

According to Aliza Wasserman, Director of the Mayor's Office of Food Justice, many families in Boston struggle to access and afford fresh and healthy food. By partnering with local organizations and farmers markets, the city hopes to give its highest need residents the resources they need to buy food with dignity while also supporting Massachusetts growers and producers.

The program is open to Boston residents aged 18 or older who need assistance affording groceries. This includes individuals currently receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and Healthy Incentive Program (HIP) benefits. Eligibility is based on self-reported age, income, and Boston residency. Interested individuals can apply online at boston.gov/farmers-market-coupon, over the phone by calling 3-1-1 (interpretation services are available), or by visiting designated community enrollment sites across the city.

Selected households will receive a $100 coupon booklet upfront, which will cover the full season from July through October. The booklet provides a $25 allocation per month that can be spent on fresh fruits, vegetables, dried goods, bread, dairy, meat, eggs, and seafood at any of the 18 participating farmers markets throughout Boston.

The deadline to apply for Farmers Market Coupons is June 28th at 11:59 PM. After this date, eligible residents will be entered into a randomized lottery process with priority given to applicants from neighborhoods with high rates of food insecurity and older adults. Those selected will be notified via email or text message and assigned a specific site to pick up their coupon booklet. All remaining eligible applicants will be placed on a waitlist and may receive coupons later in July. This new, centralized enrollment process aims to ensure fair, transparent, and equitable access to the coupons for all Boston residents.

Funding for the 2026 Farmers Market Coupon Program comes from the Office of Food Justice's operating dollars and FY26 Participatory Budgeting funds. In addition to this program, residents can also take advantage of other resources to maximize their food budget. These include SNAP benefits, which can be used directly at all farmers markets in the city, and the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP), which automatically puts $40-$80 back on an EBT card for fresh fruits and vegetables when used at participating farmers markets.
