Applications open for Springfield Police Department motorcycle safety course

Springfield, Mo. ~ Springfield, Mo. - The Springfield Police Department Traffic Section is offering experienced riders the opportunity to enhance their skills through the Share the Road civilian motorcycle course. This one-day course, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, aims to equip motorcyclists with tools and techniques to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes.

The Share the Road course covers advanced riding techniques, motorcycle handling, object avoidance, and other skills that can help riders become safer on the road. Interested applicants must submit their applications by Thursday, Sept. 4 at noon.

To be eligible for the course, riders must have a valid motorcycle endorsement (not a permit) and own a motorcycle with a minimum engine size of 250cc. Three-wheel motorcycles are not allowed. Additionally, all motorcycles must have legal exhaust and handlebars (no "ape hangers") and be street legal for inspection purposes. Riders must also have motorcycle insurance and wear proper safety gear including a DOT approved helmet, eye protection, footwear that covers the ankles, and appropriate attire. Optional equipment such as armored or padded gear is also recommended.

The final Share the Road course for 2025 will be held on Oct. 11. Interested riders can fill out an interest application to attend a course date. For any questions about the course, riders can email [email protected]
