Bloomington: Rogers Street Closed at Switchyard Park Entrance for Two Weeks for Crosswalk Construction

TelAve News/10896855
Bloomington, Ind. ~ Bloomington, Ind. - In preparation for the construction of a new pedestrian crossing for the Powerline Trail, Rogers Street will be temporarily closed starting on May 26. The closure is expected to last until June 7, 2026.

The project, which is part of the larger Powerline Trail construction, will involve the installation of a raised and ADA-accessible pedestrian crossing on South Rogers Street. This will be located just north of the vehicle entrance to Switchyard Park. Along with the crossing itself, curb ramps and a pedestrian-activated traffic warning device will also be installed. The new crosswalk aims to provide a safe way for pedestrians to cross Rogers Street and access Switchyard Park and the Powerline Trail.

Due to the construction work, Rogers Street will be fully closed between May 26 and June 7. During this time, the only access point to Switchyard Park from Rogers Street will be from the south. However, both parking lots at Grimes Street and South Walnut Street will remain open and unaffected.

The Powerline Trail is a 0.9-mile long trail that is 12 feet wide. It will feature a trailhead west of Rogers Street with amenities such as bike racks, benches, and trees. The trail itself will follow the utility easement westward, connecting Switchyard Park, RCA Community Park, and the Osage Place neighborhood.

Contractor Monroe LLC has already begun staging equipment at the project site since April. The Parks and Recreation department is working closely with the contractor, as well as with the City of Bloomington, Monroe County officials, and event planners for Switchyard Park in order to schedule this closure during a time that minimizes impacts on park access and traffic.

Construction of the Powerline Trail is expected to be completed later this year. For more information about this project or to stay updated on its progress:
