~ Boston, MA - As the summer season approaches, Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) is gearing up to open its pools to the public. The BCYF Clougherty Pool in Charlestown will officially open its doors on Saturday, June 20th. This outdoor pool, along with several other indoor pools operated by BCYF, are free resources available to residents looking to cool off during the hot summer months.

Located at 331 Bunker Hill Street, the BCYF Clougherty Pool will be open six days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is free for all Boston residents to swim at any of the BCYF pools. However, there are some protocols in place that visitors must follow as they head into the summer season.

Firstly, visitors must create a profile on Boston.gov/BCYF-Registration in order to be checked in upon arrival and prevent overcrowding. Additionally, only Boston residents will be allowed entry into the pools. Children under eight years old must have an adult present in the water with them at all times and each adult can only accompany up to three children under 12 years old. All pools will be staffed by trained lifeguards and visitors are advised to bring their own water.

As always, safety is a top priority when it comes to swimming. The city of Boston urges families and individuals to keep these safety tips in mind when near any body of water:

- Always supervise children near water and make sure they swim only in designated areas where lifeguards are present.

- Never swim alone and always stay close to a lifeguard.

- Learn how to swim properly by contacting your local BCYF pool for lessons.

- Do not dive into shallow water or ignore "No Diving" signs.

Mayor Wu, along with the Public Facilities Department, BCYF, and Boston Public Schools, have made it a priority to invest in the city's pool infrastructure and streamline processes to prevent deferred maintenance that has caused pool closures in recent years. The newly renovated Clougherty Bathhouse, which was completed this year, is a testament to this commitment. The two-year, $35.5 million renovation project has brought new life to the pool and bathhouse.

In addition to the BCYF Clougherty Pool, there are several other neighborhood pools that are expected to be open for the summer season. These include BCYF Condon, BCYF Charlestown, BCYF Draper, BCYF Flaherty, BCYF Hennigan, BPS Madison Park (operated by BCYF for community access this summer), BCYF Mason, BCYF Marshall, BCYF Mattahunt, BCYF Mildred, BCYF Perkins, BCYF Paris Street Pool, BCYF Quincy, BPHC South End Fitness Center, BPS Umana and BCYF Curley Beach.

Thanks to grants administered by the City of Boston's Office of Human Services, 11 nonprofit organizations have been awarded Swim Safe grants totaling $114,892. These grants will expand access to free beginner swim lessons for young people across Boston. Families will now have access to free water safety programming and swim lessons. It is estimated that by the end of the summer season, over 700 youth will have received free swim lessons through this grant. This initiative aims to improve water safety in Boston by addressing the public health threat posed by drowning and increasing access to swimming for families in the city.

BCYF is also offering programming for registered youth at community centers across the city this summer. To learn more about BCYF's programming, visit Boston.gov/BCYF. These programs are in addition to a variety of expanded BCYF programming for teens and 800 youth jobs hosted at BCYF community centers through the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program. With these resources and initiatives in place, Boston residents can look forward to a fun and safe summer season ahead.
