Boston: Celebrating Juneteenth
TelAve News/10898706
~ As Juneteenth approaches, the nation prepares to celebrate and honor the historic day of Black freedom, culture, and resilience. This year, the significance of Juneteenth is even more poignant as the country continues to grapple with issues of racial equality.
In 2021, Juneteenth was officially designated as a federal holiday, recognizing its importance in American history. It serves as a reminder of the promise of emancipation and the ongoing struggle for full equality that still remains unfinished.
The recent Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais has further highlighted the need for continued efforts towards achieving racial equality. The ruling enforces limitations on the Voting Rights Act, which could greatly impact representation for people of color in the United States.
In light of these events, Juneteenth is not only a commemoration of the past but also a call to action in the present. It is a time to reflect on how far we have come and how much work still needs to be done.
To celebrate this historic occasion, various events and activities are being organized in Boston. The City of Boston has designated an official Juneteenth hub with a range of events including a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, a celebration in Beacon Hill, and an annual gathering at Franklin Park over the weekend of June 19th.

Boston's visitor bureau has also compiled a list of free and paid Juneteenth events happening throughout the city. The Museum of African American History (MAAH) is offering free admission and celebrations on June 19th, as well as hosting a block party on Nantucket Island on June 20th.
The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Boston will be offering free admission all day on June 19th in partnership with the Boston Ujima Project. The celebration will include a zine fair, food vendors, short films, DJ sets, and live musical performances. Free tickets can be reserved starting June 18th at 10 AM.
The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston is also joining in the Juneteenth celebrations by offering free admission to all Massachusetts residents for a full day of performances, art-making, guided tours, and talks. Highlights include live music, a chess academy, poetry workshops, and spotlight talks on Black artistic history.
As always, the EAP encourages individuals to reach out with any other events or resources that can be highlighted during this important time. Juneteenth is not only a celebration of the past but also an opportunity to come together and continue the fight for racial equality.
