Boston: Mayor Michelle Wu Announces City's Black History Month Programming

~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the City's Equity & Inclusion Cabinet have announced a series of programs to commemorate the start of the 100th anniversary of Black History Month. The national theme for this year, "A Century of Black History Commemorations," encourages residents to reflect on a century of collective remembrance and how Black history observances have shaped identity, fueled movements for justice, and continue to inform the past, present, and future of Black communities.

Mayor Wu, along with local elected officials and residents, kicked off the month-long celebration yesterday with the City's annual Black History Month event and flag raising. In her statement, Mayor Wu emphasized the deep impact that Boston's Black communities have had on the city and expressed her excitement for this year's programming.

Chief of Equity & Inclusion Mariangely Solis Cervera also spoke about the significance of this milestone in honoring a century of Black history, achievement, and contribution that has shaped not only Boston but also the nation as a whole. She urged everyone to reflect on the power of remembrance and recommit to building a future that is rooted in dignity, opportunity, and belonging for all.

Lori Nelson, Senior Advisor on Racial Justice, echoed these sentiments by stating that in this centennial year of Black History Month, it is important to recognize that Black history is not peripheral to Boston's story but rather central to its identity, values, and future.

To honor Black History Month, the Boston Public Library (BPL) has released a booklist titled "Black Is..." featuring recently published titles that celebrate the achievements, complexities, struggles, and culture of the Black experience. The BPL will also be hosting special events for all ages at various branches throughout February. More information about these events can be found on their website.

For a full list of programming hosted by the City of Boston in honor of Black History Month, residents can visit the City's website. Some of the highlighted events include the City of Boston Black History Month Celebration and Flag Raising Program on February 3rd, which featured remarks from Mayor Wu and a ceremonial flag raising, and the BCYF Black History Annual Skate Night on February 19th, where Boston youths aged 17 and under can skate with friends and family at Chez Vous Skating Rink in Dorchester.

On February 21st, the Mayor's Office of Veteran Affairs will be hosting a Black Veterans Appreciation Luncheon at Hibernian Hall to celebrate and honor the contributions and sacrifices of Black veterans in shaping the United States' legacy. The City will also be presenting Community and Outstanding Service awards to deserving veterans.

Lastly, on February 26th, an in-person event titled "Finding Acceptance as LGBTQIA2S+ in the Black Church" will take place at the Bruce Bolling Building. This event aims to bring together affirming Black pastors and community partners to explore the intersection of Black identity, queerness, and spirituality while promoting inclusive faith spaces and fostering connection within Boston's Black LGBTQIA2S+ community.

As Boston enters its 100th year of celebrating Black History Month, these programs serve as a reminder to honor and recognize the significant contributions of Black communities throughout history. They also provide opportunities for residents to engage in meaningful discussions about identity, justice, and belonging.
