~ Boston Continues to Prioritize Safer Streets and Active Transportation with Expansion of Bike Initiatives
As the number of residents turning to bicycles for commuting, recreation, and fitness continues to rise, the city of Boston is taking steps to ensure their safety and promote a more bike-friendly environment. The City Council recently adopted a resolution recognizing May as Bike Month and celebrating the many benefits that bicycling brings to the community.
National Bike Month, established by the League of American Cyclists in 1956, aims to encourage bicycling and raise awareness about its positive impacts. It highlights biking as a mode of transportation that not only promotes healthier communities but also contributes to environmental sustainability, stronger neighborhood connections, and local economic activity.
The resolution, proposed by Councilor Pepén, also pays tribute to former Mayor Thomas M. Menino for his support of multimodal transportation and his efforts in advancing bike safety initiatives throughout Boston. This recognition serves as a reminder of the city's commitment to promoting active transportation.

In addition to this resolution, the City Council also acknowledged Boston's partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission and Blue Cross Blue Shield in maintaining and expanding the Bluebikes rideshare program. This program has greatly improved access to bicycling for residents and commuters across Boston and surrounding municipalities.
The Council also recognized the success of Boston's Bike to Work Day event held on May 7 at City Hall Plaza. The event aimed to promote active transportation while bringing together members of Boston's bicycling community.
Furthermore, the resolution emphasizes the importance of continued investment in bicycle infrastructure and roadway safety measures. By doing so, it aims to better protect cyclists and improve connectivity throughout the city.
With these initiatives in place, Boston is making great strides towards becoming a more bike-friendly city while promoting healthier lifestyles for its residents. As Bike Month continues throughout May, let us all join in celebrating this sustainable mode of transportation that benefits both individuals and communities alike.
