Boston Shines a Light on Housing Equity This April

~ Boston Shines Light on Housing Equity in April
As the month of April begins, the city of Boston is turning its attention to housing equity. Councilors Worrell, Louijeune, and Breadon have introduced a resolution to officially recognize Fair Housing Month in the city. This resolution honors decades of advocacy and ongoing efforts to ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable, and equitable housing.
The resolution brings attention to historic barriers that have limited homeownership opportunities for Black and Latino households. These barriers include discriminatory policies, redlining, and lending inequities. Research has shown stark disparities in homeownership rates, with only 40% of Black households and 37% of Latino households owning homes compared to 73% of White households. Additionally, mortgage denial rates for Black residents have historically been three times higher than for White residents.

The challenges faced by these communities are compounded by rising home prices and heavy rent burdens, particularly in neighborhoods with high displacement rates. However, the resolution also celebrates Boston's rich legacy of grassroots activism. From community-led anti-displacement campaigns to innovative zoning reforms championed by the late Robert Terrell, former Director of the Office of Fair Housing.
In recognizing Fair Housing Month, the Council is honoring local organizations such as Action for Equity, the Boston Tenant Coalition, Reclaim Roxbury, DSNI, Dorchester Not For Sale, Housing Forward, and the Chinese Progressive Association. This reaffirms the city's commitment to policies that promote equity, inclusion, and fair housing opportunities for all Boston residents.
With this resolution in place, Boston is taking a step towards addressing housing inequities and ensuring that all residents have equal access to safe and affordable housing. The city continues to strive towards creating a more inclusive and fair community for all its residents.
