Boston: Supporting Those Who Served the City: Council Backs Increased COLA for Retirees
TelAve News/10896866
~ Boston retirees are set to receive some much-needed support in the face of rising living costs, thanks to a new resolution adopted by the City Council. The resolution, proposed by Councilors Flynn and Mejia, aims to provide an annual 3% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and increase the COLA base for retirees in the Boston Retirement System.
This move comes after years of dedicated public service from these retirees, who have played a crucial role in serving the residents of Boston. The resolution recognizes their contributions and acknowledges that they deserve a fair and dignified standard of living in their retirement years.

Currently, retirees in the Boston Retirement System receive an annual COLA increase of $450, with no changes to their COLA base since 2021. This has made it increasingly difficult for them to keep up with the high cost of living in Boston, including expenses such as housing, groceries, and utilities.
The resolution highlights the importance of ensuring that these retired city workers can continue to afford living in the city they served. As such, it supports raising the COLA base from $15,000 to $18,000 for retirees in the Boston Retirement System.
With this new effort, it is hoped that retired city workers will be able to maintain a decent standard of living and enjoy their well-deserved retirement after dedicating their careers to public service.
