~ Boston City Council Votes to Amend Commemoration Commission Ordinance

On March 19, 2025, the Boston City Council made a significant decision to amend the ordinance that established the Commemoration Commission. This amendment, which was first discussed in July 2024 and proposed by commissioner vote in October 2024, aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Commission.

The main change in this revision is the reduction of voting members from 44 to 37. This decision was made in response to the frequent issue of not having enough members present for a quorum. Additionally, the original subcommittee structure has been replaced by advisory committees and stakeholder groups. While these groups will not have any official voting power, they will be able to share ideas and recommendations in a non-binding manner.

To further support these amendments, the Commemoration Commission staff is currently working on developing bylaws that will provide a framework for the Commission's success in their tasks. These bylaws will be included in a handbook for commissioners to refer to regularly.

During this meeting, one new member was sworn into the Commission and three additional seats are yet to be filled. The commissioners also worked on an interim report titled "Interim Recommendations of the Boston Commemoration Commission: Commemorative Activities for Boston 250." This report suggests various commemorative activities that can be undertaken and explored for Boston's upcoming 250th anniversary.

In an effort to showcase Boston's diverse historical resources, the Commemoration Commission has compiled a list of repositories, historical collections, projects, museums, and other places where people can learn about Boston's history. With support from the Boston Public Library, this list will soon be accessible as the "Boston Historical Collections and Resources Database" on the Library's website. The aim is for this database to serve as a starting point for both residents and visitors who wish to deepen their understanding of Boston's shared history. It will also be a living resource, with users being able to contribute by filling out a web form to add any missing information.

As the city gears up for its 250th anniversary of the Siege of Boston, Evacuation Day, and Independence Day in 2026, the Commemoration Commission is working tirelessly to create unforgettable experiences. They are also looking ahead to Boston's 400th anniversary and are excited about what the future holds. With these amendments and initiatives in place, the Commission is determined to make Boston's milestones truly memorable for all.
