California: Governor Newsom orders flags at half-staff as Reverend Jesse Jackson laid to rest

~ Sacramento - As the nation prepares to lay civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson to rest, Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered flags at the State Capitol and all state buildings to be flown at half-staff in his honor. Public memorial services for Reverend Jackson will be held on Friday in Chicago, followed by a private ceremony on Saturday.
In a statement, Governor Newsom expressed his admiration for Reverend Jackson and his impact on society. "As we pay our final respects to Reverend Jesse Jackson before he is laid to rest this weekend, I am ordering flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor," said Governor Newsom. "Reverend Jackson paved the righteous path that we now must walk to fulfill his vision of a better world, and his lifetime of lessons and wisdom leaves us well-prepared to do so."
Reverend Jesse Jackson was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, known for his tireless efforts in fighting for equality and justice. Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D., Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus, also paid tribute to Reverend Jackson's legacy. "Reverend Jesse Jackson was a giant among us, who spent his life pushing America to live up to its promise," said Senator Pierson. "His commitment reminds us that real progress happens when people from every background stand together in the pursuit of dignity and equality."

Governor Newsom's proclamation was accompanied by a statement from him and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom on Reverend Jackson's passing. The statement highlighted Reverend Jackson's dedication to social justice and called for continued efforts towards equity and fairness for all.
Flags will remain lowered until Saturday at sunset as a sign of respect for Reverend Jackson's contributions. In other news, Governor Newsom announced appointments today including Caroline Thomas Jacobs as Director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
Additionally, Governor Newsom proclaimed March 1 through March 7, 2026, as "Peace Corps Week" in honor of the organization's mission to promote peace and friendship around the world. The Governor and First Partner also announced the 19th class of inductees to the California Hall of Fame, which includes leaders and luminaries in athletics, civil rights, culinary arts, and entertainment.
As California mourns the loss of Reverend Jesse Jackson, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations to fight for a more just and equal society.
