The theme for this year's celebration is "Inherent Sovereignty: Tribal Nations Fighting to Protect Our People and Defend Our Land." This theme highlights the deep commitment of tribal nations to safeguarding their inherent rights to bodily autonomy, spiritual and material relationships with lands and waters, and the unique cultural expression of Native peoples across the state.

In recent years, tribal nations have achieved significant milestones in furtherance of these rights through their advocacy efforts. They have secured historic funding and policy initiatives in areas such as housing, public safety, wellness, and community care. Additionally, they have successfully fought for land return and access throughout the state, expanding tribal ownership and co-stewardship through partnerships and determination to restore ancestral homelands.

Governor Newsom also reflected on the progress made in addressing pressing issues with the help of California tribal nations. Together, they have acknowledged the violence and exploitation that marked the early relationship between the state and Native peoples.
