California: Governor Newsom proclaims Juneteenth Day of Observance
TelAve News/10899197
~ Sacramento, California - On June 19, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom declared "Juneteenth National Freedom Day: A Day of Observance" in the State of California. This proclamation was made to honor the thousands of enslaved people who were finally freed on this day in 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
The proclamation was issued in response to the ongoing efforts to whitewash America's history and erase the dark and painful parts of our past. Governor Newsom emphasized that by acknowledging and remembering these struggles, we can fully appreciate the triumphs that followed.
Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black Americans for decades, with many bringing their traditions and celebrations with them as they migrated to California. The state has a rich history of diversity and inclusivity, with cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco being home to large populations of Black Americans.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom urged all Californians to reflect on the ongoing fight for freedom for Black Americans. He reminded us that although General Granger's announcement in 1865 called for "absolute equality," this vision is still far from complete. He encouraged everyone to celebrate how far we have come while also recognizing how much further we have to go to truly realize our nation's founding ideals.
As a symbol of California's commitment to honoring Juneteenth, Governor Newsom officially declared June 19, 2026 as "Juneteenth National Freedom Day: A Day of Observance." This date will now be recognized as an official state holiday.
The governor's proclamation was signed on June 17th and witnessed by Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. The Great Seal of the State of California was affixed to the document as a symbol of its importance.
In other recent news from Governor Newsom's office, he announced a first-in-the-nation initiative called California Jobs First. This initiative will fund a rural business innovation hub in Yreka, California, which will support entrepreneurship and economic growth in the area.

Additionally, Governor Newsom announced a $269 million investment to advance the Sites Reservoir project, which will expand California's water storage capacity and provide enough water to supply 4.5 million homes per year. This is part of the state's overall strategy to support its growing population of 40 million residents.
Finally, Governor Newsom and Acting Governor Monique Limón honored the fallen personnel from a California-based active-duty squadron at Edwards Air Force Base who tragically lost their lives in a recent crash. The state joins the country in mourning their loss and honoring their service.
Governor Newsom's actions demonstrate his commitment to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and economic growth in California. By recognizing Juneteenth as an official state holiday and investing in initiatives that support rural communities and water storage, he is working towards creating a more just and equal society for all Californians.
