BOCA RATON, Fla. - TelAve -- (South Florida – September 23, 2026) The Carbonell Awards, South Florida's highly coveted recognition of theatrical production and performance excellence, today announced two new judges. Their addition brings the total number of active Carbonell judges to 50, including 17 in Broward County, 12 in Miami-Dade, and 21 in Palm Beach County. Collectively, they will see and evaluate more than 100 different productions at more than 30 professional theaters across all three counties during the current theater season that runs between September 1, 2026, and August 31, 2027. Carbonell Awards Judging Process

For all award eligible productions:

+ Theatres are strongly encouraged to fill-out and submit in advance the Producer's Questionnaire determining the specific category in which each performer/artist should be considered. If this requested Questionnaire is not submitted, each judge can so decide.

+ From the pool of 50 potential judges, Carbonell Coordinator Elizabeth Dashiell will assign 7 judges per show, including one professional theatre critic and, whenever possible, judges from all three counties.

+ Using a point system adapted from the ariZoni Theatre Awards and following a strict scoring rubric for each competitive category (which can be found on the Carbonell website), judges give point scores from 1-to-100 for every performer/artist in each category. At the end of each season, after reviewing numerous shows at multiple theatres, judges can revisit and revise all their scores before the final totals are compiled.

+ Of the seven scores given for every performer/artist in each category, the top and bottom scores are eliminated, and the final point total is determined by the 5 remaining scores. The top six scores in each category are the finalists with the annual Carbonell Award going to the recipient of the highest score.

49^th Annual Carbonell Awards

This season's Carbonell Awards will be presented at a glittery ceremony on Monday, November 16, at FAU's University Theatre in Boca Raton. Hundreds of actors, musicians, performers, writers, directors, back-stage technicians, producers, reviewers, designers, specialty artists, and diehard theater fans are expected to attend South Florida's version of Broadway's Tony Awards® under the leadership of Executive Producer and Director Andrew Kato, Producer Eloisa Ferrer, and Associate Producer and Musical Director Caryl Fantel. Tickets for the ceremony and after party are only $45 and will go on public sale in mid-October.
