Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson convenes CPD And CVI Leaders For Community Safety Roundtable
TelAve News/10885941
CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson brought together a group of Community Violence Intervention (CVI) workers, Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers, and city leaders for a roundtable discussion today. The meeting aimed to delve into the collaborative efforts between CPD and CVI organizations over the past year. Mayor Johnson was joined by 5th Police District Commander Karla Johnson and leaders from five CVI organizations working on the Far South Side.
The roundtable, held at the District Headquarters in Pullman, was also attended by members of the Mayor's Office of Community Safety (MOCS). The full discussion was recorded and is available for media use, along with photos from the event.
During the meeting, Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and community partners in keeping neighborhoods safe. He stated that conversations like this one have been missing from previous anti-violence strategies. As Chicago continues to see a decrease in violence, Mayor Johnson believes that understanding the needs of those working on the ground is crucial in maintaining progress and saving lives.

Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood also spoke at the roundtable, highlighting the importance of providing CPD and CVI workers with necessary tools to work together effectively. He praised the collaboration between CPD's 5th District leadership and local CVI groups for their success in addressing hotspots and preventing potential violent incidents.
The conversation focused on effective communication and collaboration between CPD officers and CVI workers. It also identified areas for growth to further expand transformative violence reduction efforts. One example of successful coordination between CPD and CVI was seen in Altgeld Gardens Apartments, where there has been a decrease in opportunities for violence.
CPD has provided critical information to CVI teams about hotspots and potential conflicts, equipping them with knowledge to defuse situations. They have also supported community activations led by CVI groups by providing presence and assistance during events such as toy drives and food giveaways.
The 5th District, which has been one of the most troubled police beats in the city, saw significant declines in crime and violence in 2025. Homicides decreased by 36.6%, shootings fell by 44.2%, multi-victim shootings dropped by 52.9%, and robberies decreased by 21.9%.
The roundtable discussion highlighted the success of collaboration between CPD and CVI organizations in reducing violence in Chicago. Mayor Johnson and city leaders are committed to continuing this partnership to address the challenges faced by communities and create a safer city for all.
