CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Condemns Trump Administration's Decision to End Temporary Protected Status for Somali Immigrants
In a recent statement, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his strong disapproval of the Trump administration's decision to revoke temporary protected status from Somali-born immigrants and long-time United States residents. The move, which has been met with widespread criticism, has been deemed as a racially motivated attack by the mayor.
Mayor Johnson stated that the decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Somali immigrants is not only deeply harmful but also a clear attempt to advance the President's xenophobic agenda. He further added that this decision was made on a whim and is causing families to be separated and households to be broken up.

The mayor highlighted the contributions of Somali families who have lived, worked, and contributed to the city and country for decades. He emphasized that they deserve stability and not fear and uncertainty.
Mayor Johnson also condemned the use of dehumanizing rhetoric by the Trump administration to justify their actions. He stated that this is an attack on shared values and immigrant communities nationwide. With Chicago being home to upwards of 80,000 African immigrants, including a significant Somali community, the mayor assured that the city stands with its Somali neighbors.
Furthermore, he pledged to continue working with partners to ensure that families have access to trusted information, legal resources, and support during this difficult time. In a message directed towards all migrant communities in Chicago, Mayor Johnson reassured them that they will always be welcome in the city.
