(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Police Department Makes Arrest in Parking Meter Theft Case

On March 31, the Columbia Police Department received a tip from an anonymous source regarding a suspicious individual exchanging a large amount of coins at a local business while wearing a City of Columbia Public Works uniform. Following an investigation, the individual was identified as James Faup, 39, of Columbia and an employee of the City's Public Works department.

Further investigation revealed that Faup had been removing coins from parking meters and exchanging them for paper currency for personal use. As a result, Faup was arrested on April 2 by Columbia Police officers on three counts of felony stealing and one count of misdemeanor stealing. It is believed that Faup engaged in this illegal activity on multiple occasions, resulting in the theft of thousands of dollars.

Faup is no longer employed by the City of Columbia and inquiries regarding personnel matters will be handled according to City policy. The investigation into this case is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573.875.8477.

According to Missouri Statutes 570.030, stealing is considered a serious offense and those found guilty can face severe consequences. In order to encourage individuals to come forward with information, CrimeStoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for any tips that lead to an arrest.

The Columbia Police Department reminds citizens that theft in any form will not be tolerated and encourages anyone with information about this incident or any other criminal activity to come forward and assist with keeping their community safe.
