City of Columbia offers service opportunities to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day
TelAve News/10885771
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia is providing two opportunities for residents to pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through volunteer service. On Saturday, January 17th, a litter pickup event will take place at the Rainbow Softball Complex in Cosmo Park, located at 1615 Business Loop 70 W. The cleanup will cover various locations including Cosmo Park, the Business Loop, North Stadium, and Creasy Springs Road. Residents can also request support for a litter cleanup specific to their group on a date that is convenient for them.
In addition to the litter pickup event, a packing party will be held on Monday, January 19th at City Hall to prepare supplies for Care Cupboards. These cupboards, organized by resident Raquel Young, provide menstrual hygiene products to areas in need. The project was chosen as one of Missouri's 2026 MLK Day of Service Mini-grants and is funded by ServMO and the nonprofit 9/11 Day. Due to limited positions available, pre-registration is required for this event.

Donations for the Care Cupboards are also being accepted and can be dropped off at Housing & Neighborhood Services from Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm or brought directly to the Packing Party on January 19th.
On MLK Day itself, Youth in Action volunteers will be serving in the kitchen of Ronald McDonald House. This activity is open to volunteers ages 12-15 who will work alongside Volunteer Programs staff to create and serve a meal for those staying at the facility. However, all positions have already been filled.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a national program that encourages individuals to make it "a day on, not a day off" by serving their community in honor of Dr. King's message that "everybody can be great because everybody can serve."
