TelAve News/10892394
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ At the recent Missouri Water Environment Association (MWEA) and Missouri Section of the American Water Works Association (MO-AWWA) Joint Annual Meeting, City of Columbia Utilities was recognized for their outstanding achievements. The city took home two awards, solidifying their commitment to providing high-quality drinking water to their community.
The first award received by City of Columbia Utilities was first place in the 2026 Drinking Water Taste Contest. This is the second time the city has won this award since its establishment in 2016, with their previous win being in 2018. The contest is an initiative by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to maintain high standards for drinking water. With this win, City of Columbia Utilities is now eligible to represent the MO-AWWA Section at the National AWWA Annual Contest and Exposition in June.
In addition to winning the Drinking Water Taste Contest, City of Columbia Utilities also received recognition for their McBaine Water Treatment Plant Improvement Project. The project was awarded the MO-Section AWWA Sustainability Award, which recognizes projects that promote sustainable environmental benefits for water-related projects.

The McBaine Water Treatment Plant Improvement Project will not only restore the plant's capacity but also extend its lifespan. This will provide a variety of benefits to customers, including reliable, safe, and affordable water service. The project also aims to enhance operational controls and efficiency, improve finished water quality using existing treatment processes, and establish long-term water quality goals informed by treatment costs and benefits.
The Missouri Section of the American Water Works Association serves as a platform for open discussions on industry practices and actively works with regulatory and legislative bodies to advocate for public policies that align with their goal of providing clean and reliable drinking water.
City of Columbia Utilities' success at these awards showcases their dedication to providing top-notch services to their community while also prioritizing sustainability. Their achievements serve as an inspiration for other utilities companies across Missouri to strive for excellence in their operations.
