City of Long Beach Celebrates Older Americans Month with Series of Events throughout May

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As the month of May approaches, the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is gearing up to celebrate Older Americans Month with a variety of free programming and events for adults ages 50 and older. This annual celebration, recognized nationally each May, aims to honor the contributions of older adults and reaffirm commitments to supporting their communities through inclusive and impactful programming and services.

Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his appreciation for the older adults in the community, stating that they are an integral part of Long Beach. He also emphasized the importance of celebrating their lasting contributions and reaffirming the city's commitment to supporting their health, social connections, and overall well-being. "We are dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where residents ages 50 and older can stay active, engaged, and valued throughout Older Americans Month and all year round," Mayor Richardson said.

Led by the Administration for Community Living, this year's Older Americans Month theme is "Champion Your Health." The focus is on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as key pillars of healthy aging. The theme encourages older adults to take an active role in their health.

To celebrate Older Americans Month, PRM has planned a variety of specialty programming and events. These include the return of the Older Americans Blooming Talent Show where adults can showcase their unique talents on stage; the Silverado Senior Carnival Extravaganza featuring carnival games, a live DJ, magic show, line dancing, and delicious food; as well as a brand new field trip excursion to the Los Angeles County Fair. Other activities include a sound bath and nature walk, Sustainable Independence Resource Fair, pickleball tournament, movie night, and more.

While most events are exclusively for adults ages 50 and above, community members are welcome to attend the pickleball tournament and talent show. Registration for select events will begin on April 13.

PRM is hosting Older Americans Month with additional sponsorship from the Port of Long Beach. The department encourages adults ages 50 and above to stay active and healthy by following lifestyle tips provided by the Administration for Community Living. These include staying up to date on preventive care and screenings, building and maintaining social connections, choosing nutritious foods, incorporating regular physical activity, and practicing daily habits that support mental health and resilience.

PRM's Older Adults Program offers year-round programming and services at six locations throughout the city to keep older adults healthy, active, and engaged. These activities range from arts and cultural experiences, dance, fitness, life-long learning opportunities, enrichment, health and social services, nutrition, excursions, drop-in and special events, volunteerism, and special interest groups. This program aligns with the City's Age-Friendly Action Plan and supports PRM's Parks Make Long Beach Strategic Plan.
