City of Mesa Engineering Department Builds Bridges with Local 6th Grade Students

~ Mesa, AZ - For the past 15 years, the City of Mesa Engineering Department has been hosting an annual Bridge Building Competition for sixth grade students in celebration of National Engineering Week. This event aims to promote engineering careers and showcase the important role engineers play in our community.

Under the guidance and mentorship of Mesa's engineering staff, students from Crismon Elementary School have been given the opportunity to design, build and test bridges made from popsicle sticks. Through this hands-on experience, students not only learn about engineering principles but also gain insight into real-world applications.

The week-long competition will conclude on Thursday, Feb. 26 at Crismon Elementary at 10 a.m. with the official bridge building competition. The student projects will be evaluated in three categories: strongest load capacity, best-looking design, and most creative team name. The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at 12:15 p.m., recognizing their hard work and innovation.

This event serves as a platform for Mesa's Engineering Department to inspire and encourage the next generation of engineers. By providing students with a fun and educational experience, they hope to spark an interest in pursuing a career in engineering. National Engineering Week is an important reminder of the vital contributions engineers make to our community.
