~ Spokane Implements Emergency Streets Program After Fatal Crash

The City of Spokane has taken swift action following a fatal crash that occurred on Sunday night near the intersection of N. Ash St. and W. Courtland Ave. Erin Hut, Communications Director for the city, announced that this will be the first installation of the Emergency Streets program.

Emergency Streets is a pilot program that aims to improve traffic safety by implementing temporary traffic-calming measures within 72 hours after a fatal crash. The installation will close one lane of southbound Ash St. from Kiernan to Euclid for 14 days, starting on Tuesday, September 21 in the afternoon.

The temporary treatment will include highly visible traffic cones, pink Emergency Streets signs, and a speed feedback sign. During this time, city staff will closely monitor traffic conditions, collect speed data, and gather community feedback. The public is also encouraged to participate in a survey regarding Emergency Streets.

According to Hut, the crash on Sunday night was a single vehicle motorcycle accident that resulted in the death of the motorcyclist. This marks the 18th motorcycle fatality in Spokane since the beginning of 2023, all involving male motorcyclists. Speed has been identified as a common factor in these crashes.

Studies have shown that speed is one of the main contributors to severe traffic crashes and even small reductions in vehicle speeds can significantly decrease the likelihood of death or serious injury. The Emergency Streets program combines engineering, education, and community engagement to promote shared responsibility for roadway safety.

Led by Spokane's Division of Transportation & Sustainability in collaboration with various city departments and community partners, this pilot program aligns with Spokane's commitment to reducing traffic fatalities through proactive and data-driven approaches consistent with their Vision Zero goals and Complete Streets policies.
