City of Tacoma Implements Strategic Freeze on Hiring and Promotions

TelAve News/10892778
~ The City of Tacoma has taken a proactive step towards ensuring fiscal discipline and responsible use of public funds. In a press release today, the city announced a temporary freeze on General Government hiring and promotions as part of its commitment to safeguarding the city's long-term financial health.

This cost-containment measure is in line with the preparations for the development of the City's 2027-2028 Biennial Budget. The decision comes after the success of a similar measure implemented in late 2024, which resulted in an estimated $4.8 million in savings for the city in 2025. The current action aims to achieve similar savings for 2026.

City Manager Hyun Kim stated that this temporary freeze on hiring and promotions will allow the city to carefully evaluate its organizational needs and align its staffing with community priorities, long-term strategic goals, and current financial realities. He also emphasized that despite this measure, the city remains deeply committed to its workforce and serving the Tacoma community efficiently.

To ensure that essential public services are not disrupted, the City has established a Critical Hire Review Committee. This committee will evaluate each vacancy on a case-by-case basis to ensure that critical operations are fully resourced, community service levels are maintained, and all operational savings are accurately tracked. This approach avoids broad exemptions and instead focuses on specific vacancies.

The strategic freeze on hiring and promotions is effective immediately and is expected to remain in place until the end of the year. The City of Tacoma remains dedicated to responsible financial management while continuing to provide essential services to its community.
