Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is offering a unique opportunity for young people to gain practical work experience through the Long Beach Public Service Corps Program (LBPSC). The program, facilitated by the City's Economic Development Department, provides paid internships in various roles across City departments. Applications for the third cohort are now being accepted online until Monday, June 30, 2025.

According to Mayor Rex Richardson, the LBPSC aims to open doors for the next generation of local leaders by giving them real-world experience and a pathway into public service. With a hiring preference for program alumni through the Long Beach Jobs Promise, the program also aims to build a pipeline of homegrown talent ready to serve their community and bring fresh ideas to local government.

The LBPSC is run by the Department's Long Beach Workforce Innovation Network (LBWIN) Youth Career Services Center, formerly known as Future LB. It is open to college seniors and recent graduates ages 18-30 who are looking to gain hands-on experience in City government and explore careers in public service. The program also aims to foster economic inclusion and expand opportunities for residents, including young people, to develop successful career paths.

Participants will engage in professional development workshops covering important topics in public service such as budgeting, community engagement, crisis management, sustainability, ethics and policy. They will be compensated $22 per hour for a maximum of 800 hours during the 2025-2026 academic year.

Priority will be given to senior-level students at California State University, Long Beach or California State University, Dominguez Hills; those completing a career technical education program at Long Beach City College; students residing in Long Beach; and those who face barriers to employment. Bo Martinez, Director of the Economic Development Department, believes that the LBPSC provides youth with innovative and unique opportunities to break into the workforce and discover a future in public service. He also expressed excitement for the promising and talented young people that the third cohort is sure to bring.

The LBPSC is funded by a $2.5 million grant from California Volunteers, Office of the Governor #CaliforniansForAII Youth Jobs Corps initiative. This funding also supports other youth employment efforts coordinated by LBWIN, including public service internships and the Long Beach Urban Planning and Design Internship Program. The program also received a one-time allocation of $300,000 from the Mayor and City Council as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

The first cohort of 50 students was welcomed in November 2023, with placements in various City departments and participation in professional development workshops. The second cohort of 49 fellows joined in December 2024.

The LBPSC is a collaborative effort between the Department's Workforce Development Bureau, the Long Beach Human Resources Department, and the City's legislative offices. Department staff will provide case management and payroll coordination for participants, as well as supportive wraparound services such as transportation assistance, clothing vouchers, rental assistance, and utility payment assistance to ensure their success in the program. Participants will also receive job counseling, employment placement, and access to industry-recognized training to support their long-term career goals.
