Colorado: Governor Polis Celebrates New Investments to Build Better Transit-Oriented Communities

WINTER PARK ~ Governor Jared Polis of Colorado has signed a new law that aims to bridge the gap between affordable housing, infrastructure, and transit expansions in the state. The law, known as HB26-1065 - Transit and Housing Investment Zones, was sponsored by Speaker Julie McCluskie and Representative Steven Woodrow, along with Senators Dylan Roberts and Tony Exum.
During the signing ceremony in Winter Park, Governor Polis expressed his excitement about the potential impact of this law on Colorado communities. He stated that by investing in transportation and housing together, the state is creating livable and workable spaces for its residents to thrive. He also thanked the sponsors of the bill, as well as local governments, builders, and environmental advocates for their support in strengthening Colorado communities.
Speaker McCluskie echoed Governor Polis' sentiments about the importance of making Colorado more affordable for its residents. She emphasized that this new financing tool will provide a pathway for local governments to increase funding for multimodal transit systems and affordable housing options. She also highlighted the need for such initiatives in areas like the High Country.

Representative Woodrow also spoke about the benefits of this law in reducing housing costs and traffic congestion while increasing transit ridership. He praised his fellow Democrats for their commitment to addressing Colorado's affordability crisis through innovative solutions like this one.
Senator Roberts, who represents mountain and rural communities with severe housing shortages, expressed his pride in sponsoring this legislation. He believes that it will help finance and build homes that working families can afford in partnership with various stakeholders.
Senator Exum also emphasized the importance of addressing housing costs in his district through this new law. By allowing for more homes to be built near reliable transit options, he believes that it will provide working families with much-needed mobility options without having to leave their beloved communities.
