DENVER ~ In Denver, Governor Polis took action today by signing two Executive Orders to officially recognize previous verbal disaster declarations for three major fires in Colorado. The first Executive Order memorializes the Governor's verbal disaster declaration from August 3, 2025 for the Elk Fire in Rio Blanco County. This declaration was later expanded on August 5, 2025 to include the Lee Fire in Garfield County, as both fires were sparked by similar weather conditions and required shared firefighting resources.

Additionally, this Executive Order acknowledges the Governor's verbal authorization on August 6, 2025 to utilize unarmed members of the Colorado National Guard in support of fire suppression efforts. As of August 17, the Elk Fire had been fully contained after burning a total of 14,518 acres.

The second Executive Order memorializes the Governor's verbal disaster declaration from August 4, 2025 for the Leroux Fire in Delta County. As of August 18, this fire had burned a total of 195 acres and was also fully contained.

However, as of August 27, the Lee Fire was still only at a containment rate of 90% and had burned a staggering total of 137,758 acres. This makes it the fifth largest fire in Colorado's history. These Executive Orders serve as a formal recognition and documentation of these devastating disasters that have affected multiple counties in Colorado.
