Colorado: Governor Polis Signs Bills Into Law Reducing Human-Animal Conflicts and Expanding Safe Outdoor Recreation Opportunities

WINTER PARK ~ Winter Park - Governor Jared Polis made a significant move towards protecting public safety, supporting Colorado wildlife, and strengthening the state's outdoor recreation economy today at the Cozens Ranch Museum in Winter Park. The governor signed four new laws that will have a positive impact on the state and its residents.
The first law, SB26-141 - Wildlife Collision Prevention, was sponsored by Senator Dylan Roberts, Minority Leader Cleave Simpson, Speaker Julie McCluskie, and Representative Rick Taggart. This law will allocate car registration fees towards wildlife projects aimed at reducing human-animal conflicts.
Governor Polis expressed his enthusiasm for this new law, stating that Colorado is known for its world-class outdoors and amazing wildlife. He believes that by expanding safe travel options for both humans and animals, everyone who calls Colorado home will be kept safe. The second law signed by Governor Polis was HB26-1342 - Negligently Luring Bears. This law was sponsored by Representatives Katie Stewart and Meghan Lukens, as well as Senator Janice Marchman. It increases the penalty for knowingly luring a bear by leaving out trash and food remnants.
Governor Polis emphasized the importance of properly storing trash and locking away food waste to reduce human-animal conflicts. He stated that it is not always what is in the picnic basket that lures a bear but also common food waste that we dispose of. This new law takes another step towards protecting bears and humans alike.

This bipartisan bill was sponsored by Representatives Meghan Lukens and Rick Taggart, as well as Senators Janice Marchman and Janice Rich.
