Colorado Springs: Historic artifacts to reach Pikes Peak summit for first time during 220th anniversary commemoration
TelAve News/10898427
~ After more than two centuries, an important piece of American history is finally reaching the summit of Pikes Peak. The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM), in partnership with Pikes Peak – America's Mountain and the National Archives, has organized a special exhibition featuring an artifact that accompanied U.S. Army Lt. Zebulon Montgomery Pike on his journey to the mountain's summit.
Pike's original field notebook, which he carried during his expedition in 1806, will be on display at the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center. This notebook will be joined by other significant items, including a sword owned by Pike on loan from History Colorado and his 1810 commission as a lieutenant colonel signed by President James Madison from the CSPM collection.

According to Matt Mayberry, director of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, Pike's expedition played a crucial role in understanding the vast land acquired through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. He believes that this exhibition will allow visitors to experience a remarkable piece of history and symbolically complete Pike's attempted ascent.
The exhibition is part of the City of Colorado Springs' participation in the America 250 Colorado 150 commemoration, which aims to highlight people, places, and events that have shaped the nation, state, and region. The project has received funding from a grant provided by Lodgers and Auto Rental Tax (LART).
Visitors can view this historic exhibit at the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center from June 12 to August 10, 2026. During this period, the Pikes Peak Highway uphill gates will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with entry allowed until 6 p.m. The Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center will remain open until 7 p.m., with admission fees applicable. For more information on visitation, tickets, and current conditions, visitors can visit DrivePikesPeak.com.
