TelAve News/10873857
~ Colorado Springs, CO - The City of Colorado Springs and the YMCA of the Pikes Peak region joined forces to celebrate the grand opening of the new Colorado Springs Senior Center. The event was attended by 500 residents and community leaders who gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house.
The partnership between the City and the YMCA has resulted in a state-of-the-art facility that aims to serve and support the senior community. While the City provided the physical space, the YMCA will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations and programming.
Mayor Yemi Mobolade expressed his excitement about the new center, stating that it is more than just a building, but a promise to honor and support seniors in Colorado Springs. He acknowledged their contributions to the community as parents, business owners, military personnel, and active members of society. The Mayor emphasized that this new center is a reflection of their commitment to creating spaces where seniors can continue to thrive.
Tom Lathrop, Operations Director for YMCA of the Pikes Peak region, also shared his enthusiasm for the project. He described the new facility as a vibrant space where seniors can connect, discover, and enjoy various activities. After two years of dedicated effort, Lathrop highlighted some key features of the center such as tripled parking space, wider hallways for easy access, and multiple activity rooms for enriching experiences.

The construction of this brand-new building began in July 2024 after two years of planning. However, mitigation work on the property started in October 2023. The new facility is almost 6,000 square feet larger than its predecessor and boasts several amenities including an open space for cooking classes and demonstrations, two indoor pickleball courts, expanded classrooms, and a dedicated dining area.
Other notable features include a kitchen that will serve meals from Silver Key Senior Services, a technology learning space, a large fitness area, outdoor gathering spaces, and a walking path around the property. The project was made possible by funding of $12.4 million from the America Rescue Plan Act, as well as generous contributions from Lyda Hill Philanthropies, the Colorado Springs Health Foundation, and the federal Community Development Block Grant program. The total cost of the project is estimated at $15.3 million.
