TelAve News/10896779
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ COLUMBIA, MO - The State of Homelessness 2025 report has been released to the public, providing valuable insights into the successes and challenges of addressing homelessness in the community. The report, which can be viewed at https://bit.ly/3Pze8TM, includes data such as the homelessness rate per 10,000 people and the number of people housed per month.

According to Human Services Manager Kari Utterback, this report is a crucial tool for understanding the needs of the community and prioritizing issues. Utterback stated that "this report helps PHHS better understand the needs of our community and also helps our partner organizations prioritize issues based on the data presented."

One notable addition to this year's report is a Cost of Housing comparison, which outlines the cost to house a person for a day in various settings such as a one-bedroom apartment, an extended stay motel, and even the Boone County jail. The comparison also includes data from Room at the Inn and the average cost from Permanent Supportive Housing Vouchers.

Carter Stephenson, a public health planner, emphasized that this report demonstrates that their coordinated system is working. In 2025 alone, they were able to utilize all available vouchers and house 152 households. Stephenson also noted that "the cost comparison demonstrates that permanent supportive housing, at $13.76 per day, is our most effective long-term response and our most compassionate approach." These numbers provide valuable information for creating a plan that can be scaled to meet the documented need in the community.

The Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) works closely with local organizations every year to gather data for planning purposes. Through these partnerships, they have been able to determine priorities for addressing homelessness in their community. With this new report available to the public, it is hoped that it will continue to inform and guide efforts towards ending homelessness in Columbia and Boone County.
