Columbia: Go COMO to restore full fixed-route bus service beginning May 26

TelAve News/10896547
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia's public transportation system, Go COMO Transit, has announced plans to restore full fixed-route bus service starting on Tuesday, May 26. This decision comes after months of reduced service due to a shortage of bus operators.

The restored weekday service model will see six buses operating across six routes - Green, Red, Black, Orange, Blue and Gold - throughout the day. This is a return to the service levels that were in place prior to August 2023. The buses will run from approximately 6:25 a.m. to 6:40 p.m., with a frequency of approximately every 45 minutes. This change aims to improve convenience and reduce wait times for riders across the system.

Saturday service will remain unchanged with three buses serving all six routes beginning at 10 a.m., consistent with pre-August 2023 operations. However, this is only a temporary measure as Go COMO continues to face challenges in recruiting and hiring additional operators.

In August 2023, Go COMO had implemented a temporary "combined routes" system due to the shortage of bus operators. This resulted in longer wait times for riders as only three buses were rotating between paired routes. Since then, the transit system has made some progress in recruiting and hiring more operators, allowing them to restore full service.

The timing of this transition also aligns with the University of Missouri's summer break. During this period, operators who typically serve the MU Tiger Line will be reassigned to support Go COMO's fixed-route service.

Go COMO plans to continue hiring and training additional operators throughout the summer in hopes of sustaining full service beyond August. However, this will depend on maintaining sufficient staffing levels. If operator availability declines, there may be a need to return to the combined route system.

Updated map and schedule booklets reflecting the restored service will be available on buses starting May 21. A digital version can also be accessed on Go COMO's website. Riders are encouraged to visit the website to preview the new schedules online.

It is important to note that Go COMO buses will not be operating on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. Regular fixed-route service is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, May 26.

To make riding Go COMO more convenient and predictable, riders are encouraged to take advantage of tools such as the ETA Transit app and Google Maps. The ETA Transit app allows riders to view real-time bus locations, check estimated arrival times, and receive notifications about detours and delays. Google Maps can also be used for trip planning by entering a starting point and destination to access route options and departure times.

Go COMO emphasizes that public transportation serves everyone in the community and provides an important service for many different types of customers. For more information about routes, schedules, and updates, riders can visit Go COMO's website or download the ETA Transit app.
