TelAve News/10899137
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia Water Utility has announced that they will be conducting unidirectional flushing of the water distribution system in central Columbia starting on Monday, June 22. The targeted area for this project is east of East Stadium Boulevard between Interstate 70 and West Stadium Boulevard, as indicated on the attached map.
According to the Utility, crews will be working between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and expect the project to take approximately three weeks to complete. Unidirectional flushing involves forcing water through pipes at a high velocity in order to remove mineral deposits from the interior surface of the water mains.

During this process, customers may experience cloudiness or discoloration in their water. The sediment causing this is calcium bicarbonate, also known as lime, which is commonly used as a water softener. The City assures residents that this sediment is not harmful to consume and poses no health hazard. However, if discoloration persists for more than a few hours, customers are encouraged to report their concerns by calling 573.874.CITY (2489) and Water Utility staff will promptly respond.
The City of Columbia Water Utility is committed to providing safe and clean drinking water for its residents and appreciates their patience during this necessary maintenance project.
