Cummins announces innovative next generation X15 diesel engine, part of Cummins HELM™ 15-liter fuel agnostic platform, launching in North America to meet aligned 2027 regulations
TelAve News/10821061
COLUMBUS, Ind. ~ Cummins Inc. has announced the launch of their most efficient heavy-duty diesel engine to date. The company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as CMI, revealed that the new diesel X15 will be compliant with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2027 regulations upon its release. This engine will be the latest addition to Cummins' HELM™ 15-liter fuel agnostic platform and will cater to the heavy-duty on-highway market in North America.
According to José Samperio, Vice President of North America On-Highway at Cummins, the company has utilized their decades of experience with the X15 to develop this next-generation product. He believes that these investments will benefit their customers for years to come and showcase Cummins' commitment to innovation. Samperio stated, "The next generation X15 is the next evolution of technology, truly proving to the world that we never stop innovating."
The new X15 diesel engine will maintain its traditional reliability and lower operating costs while also offering improved greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency benefits. It will retain the same ratings as its predecessor, with a maximum horsepower of 605 and torque of 2,050 ft-lb. Additionally, it will optimize powertrain integration with Eaton Cummins and Cummins-Meritor.

Jane Beaman, Vice President Global of On-Highway Business at Cummins, introduced this new engine as part of their fuel agnostic platform called Cummins HELM™. She emphasized that this platform gives customers control over their journey by offering higher efficiency, lower emissions, and multiple fuel options. Beaman stated, "They can choose the fuel types that work best for them, their businesses, and their goals."
Cummins is committed to providing quality solutions to its customers through both internal combustion engines and alternative technologies. This next-generation engine is designed to meet future emissions regulations beyond 2027 without significant architecture changes. This investment will help the company maintain its technology leadership for the next decade as it continues to fund research and development in hydrogen and alternative fuel engines, battery electric, and fuel cell powertrains.
Jonathon White, Vice President of Engine Business Engineering at Cummins, highlighted the importance of this new engine's architecture. He stated that all teams involved recognize its significance for both Cummins and their customers' future. The base architecture of this engine will carry them through the horizon of diesel technology and alternate fuels.
The next generation X15 was developed with Cummins' fully integrated powertrain in mind from the beginning. It utilizes a belt-driven, high output 48-volt alternator and aftertreatment heater solution that is optimized for increasingly stringent emission standards.

Customers who opt for EX ratings (which require Eaton Cummins Endurant and GPS look-ahead data) with Cummins Meritor axles, brakes, and drivelines will experience additional optimized fuel efficiency and drivability. This is made possible through features such as predictive gear shifting, on-ramp boost, and hill roll out.
Cummins has also provided selected assets for media use including their HELM™ platform and Next Gen X15 Multimedia Kit. They have also partnered with Eaton Cummins to offer the Endurant HD and XD series transmissions that are optimized for the next generation X15 powertrain. These transmissions promise improved efficiency and performance while maintaining drive comfort. Additionally, they have a best-in-class transmission lube change interval of up to 750,000 miles and remote diagnostic capabilities.
Furthermore, customers can also benefit from Cummins-Meritor Drivetrain Systems which include the 14X™ HE tandem drive axles designed for maximum performance, durability, and fuel economy. These axles feature a proprietary Meritor lube management system (MLMS), super-fast ratio options, fuel-efficient bearings, and high-efficiency spiral bevel gearing. The Cummins-Meritor Permalube™ RPL drivelines are also designed for reduced maintenance and can handle the high torque demands of modern downsped engine platforms.
With the launch of their most efficient heavy-duty diesel engine, Cummins has once again proven their commitment to innovation and providing quality solutions to their customers. This new engine is set to revolutionize the heavy-duty on-highway market in North America and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
