Firefighters Contain Two Separate West Spokane Fires Thursday Afternoon
TelAve News/10889471
February 26, 2026 ~ Spokane firefighters were called to the scene of two separate structure fires on Friday afternoon, February 26, 2026. The first fire was reported at 12:36 p.m. in the 1300 block of West Jackson Avenue. According to Spokane Fire PIO Justin de Ruyter, flames were visible on the main floor of a 1½-story residence when Engine 3 from the West Central neighborhood arrived within three minutes.
Upon arrival, crews immediately began an interior fire attack while additional crews conducted searches and established a water supply. Vertical ventilation was also performed to help control the heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the house. Firefighters were able to cut roof openings and extinguish the fire that had spread into the knee walls within 20 minutes.
During their search, firefighters discovered and rescued two cats from the home. One cat was found with serious injuries and was revived by firefighters using oxygen at the scene. Both cats were then transported to a local emergency veterinary clinic for further treatment. Fortunately, no human injuries were reported as the occupants were not home at the time of the fire.

After an investigation, it was determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and started by an unattended stove that had been inadvertently turned on.
While crews were still operating at the West Jackson Avenue fire, another call came in at 1:54 p.m. for a second structure fire in the 1100 block of West Nora Avenue. Battalion Chief 1 and Engine 2 arrived within two minutes to find moderate smoke coming from a detached garage. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, limiting damage to just the garage.
Investigators later determined that this fire was also accidental and caused by a heat lamp inside a chicken coop. Unfortunately, multiple chickens were found deceased due to the fire.
Images related to both fires have been released by Spokane Fire PIO Justin de Ruyter, showing both houses with visible damage. The quick response and actions of the firefighters helped to prevent further damage and injuries in both incidents.
