Florida: Governor Ron DeSantis Recommends Anastasios Kamoutsas for Education Commissioner

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ~ TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In a press conference today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced his recommendation of Anastasios Kamoutsas to serve as the next Commissioner of Education for the state of Florida. This recommendation comes after the appointment of Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. as Interim President of the University of West Florida.

Governor DeSantis praised Kamoutsas for his dedication and accomplishments in important education issues such as parental rights, school choice, and combating radical ideologies. He expressed confidence in Kamoutsas' ability to continue serving the state well in this new role.

In response to his nomination, Kamoutsas stated, "I am honored to have the trust and support of Governor Ron DeSantis to be Florida's Commissioner of Education." He also outlined his commitment to student safety and success, empowering parents, and supporting teachers during his tenure.

Kamoutsas has been heavily involved in major education initiatives since 2019 when he joined the Florida Department of Education's office of General Counsel. He then went on to serve as General Counsel and Chief of Staff before being selected as Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor DeSantis. In this role, he oversaw policy efforts for the Governor's priority areas including education, law enforcement, and emergency management.

Kamoutsas brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Florida International University and a Juris Doctor from Regent University School of Law.

If confirmed by the State Board of Education, Kamoutsas will take over from Diaz Jr., who has served as Commissioner since 2019. The Board is expected to vote on Kamoutsas' nomination at their next meeting.

Florida residents can look forward to continued progress in education under Kamoutsas' leadership as he works towards maintaining Florida's reputation as the "education state."
