A Gallery of Sound: WOA's 'Picturesque' Concert Features Mussorgsky Masterpiece
TelAve News/10874609
A Musical Gallery Comes to Life with Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," a Tribute to Female Composers, and a special performance of "America the Beautiful."
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - TelAve -- The Women's Orchestra of Arizona (WOA) is thrilled to announce the opening of its 2025-2026 season with the spectacular concert, "Picturesque," on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 3 p.m. MST. The performance, a captivating journey through sound and story, will be held at the North Scottsdale United Methodist Church, located at 11735 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ. This is an afternoon of musical artistry that you absolutely won't want to miss.
The concert begins with the spirited and playful energy of Gioachino Rossini's "Barber of Seville Overture." Famous for its rapid-fire crescendos and dynamic flair, this iconic piece sets the stage with a sense of excitement and anticipation, a perfect prelude to the afternoon's rich program.

Following this lively opening, the orchestra will present "Suffolk Suite" by the accomplished female composer, Doreen Carwithen. A child prodigy who began her musical training at the age of four, Carwithen was a pioneering force in the mid-20th century. The performance of her work underscores WOA's commitment to celebrating the contributions of women to classical music.
A special and stirring moment of the program will feature the winner of the most recent "Pass the Baton" drawing, who will step to the podium to lead the orchestra in a poignant and powerful arrangement of Samuel A. Ward's timeless anthem, "America the Beautiful."
The highlight of the afternoon's program will be selections from Modest Mussorgsky's vibrant and dramatic masterpiece, "Pictures at an Exhibition." This timeless classic brings an entire art gallery to life through the medium of music. Inspired by a posthumous exhibition of paintings and drawings by his friend Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgsky composed this suite to musically represent ten of the artworks. The famous "Promenade" theme, a recurring melody throughout the piece, acts as a beautiful musical depiction of a visitor walking from one painting to the next, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for the listener.
