Georgia: April Net Tax Revenues Up 5.9%
TelAve News/10895546
ATLANTA ~ Georgia's net tax collections for the month of April have shown a significant increase compared to the same period last year. According to the latest report released by the state's Department of Revenue, net tax revenue totaled almost $3.95 billion, marking a 5.9% increase from FY 2025 when net tax collections were at $3.73 billion.
The year-to-date figures also reflect a positive trend, with net tax revenue totaling $28.45 billion, an increase of $683.7 million or 2.5% from last year's total of $27.77 billion through ten months of FY 2025.
However, it is important to note that these comparisons were affected by recent changes in motor fuel taxes and extensions in return and payment deadlines for individual and corporate income taxes due to Hurricane Helene's impact.
After adjusting for these factors, April's net tax revenue showed an even more significant increase of 8.3% compared to the same month last year, while year-to-date collections remained up by 2.5%.

The breakdown of tax categories further explains the overall increase in net tax revenue for April:
Individual Income Tax collections saw a significant jump of 10.1%, totaling roughly $2.10 billion compared to last year's total of $1.91 billion. This increase can be attributed to various factors such as higher individual income tax refunds issued (net of voided checks), an increase in individual income tax return payments by $224 million or 22.6%, and a slight rise in individual withholding payments by $18.9 million or 1.5%. However, all other individual tax categories, including estimated payments, saw a combined decrease of $3.1 million.
Sales and Use Tax collections also showed a notable increase of 8% from April 2025, with gross sales and use tax totaling $1.78 billion and net sales and use tax increasing by $71 million or 8.5%. The adjusted sales tax distribution to local governments also saw a significant rise of 7.6%, totaling $859.6 million, while sales tax refunds increased slightly by $0.3 million.

Corporate Income Tax collections totaled $556 million in April, showing a modest increase of 2.9% compared to last year's total of roughly $540 million. This increase can be attributed to higher corporate income tax refunds issued (net of voids) by $15.6 million or 48.1%, an increase in corporate income tax return payments by $62.1 million or 30.3%, and a decrease in corporate income tax estimated payments by $19.1 million or 7.6%. All other corporate tax types, including S-corporate payments, saw a combined decrease of $11.5 million.
Motor fuel taxes, on the other hand, saw a significant decrease of $73.3 million or 36.3% from FY 2025 due to Governor Kemp's signing of HB 1199 on March 20th, suspending the collection of the state's motor fuel excise taxes for a period of 60 days.
Lastly, motor vehicle tag and title fees showed a slight increase of $2.8 million or 6.9% for the month, while title ad valorem tax (TAVT) collections decreased by $1.3 million or 1.6% from last year.
Overall, Georgia's net tax collections for April have shown positive growth compared to the same period last year, with individual income tax and sales and use tax being the main contributors to this increase in revenue for the state.
