Georgia: Gov. Kemp: Shriners Children's Research Institute Coming to Atlanta

ATLANTA ~ In a major announcement today, Governor Brian P. Kemp revealed that Shriners Children's, a nonprofit pediatric specialty healthcare system, will be establishing a new pediatric medical research facility in Atlanta. This move is expected to bring 470 new jobs to the area and an investment of over $153 million into the location at Science Square.

Governor Kemp expressed his excitement about this development, stating that Shriners Children's is a valuable addition to Georgia's growing nonprofit, R&D, and life sciences communities. He also highlighted the state's commitment to being the top destination for talent, which has attracted outstanding organizations like Shriners Children's to further life-changing research at top-ranked universities across Georgia.

Shriners Children's focuses on treating orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and cleft lip and palate. The organization also places a strong emphasis on education and research. Founded in 1922 by members of the Shriners International fraternity, Shriners Children's has provided hope and healing to nearly 2 million patients. Last year alone, they served patients from all 50 U.S. states, every province in Canada, and 128 countries.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Shriners Children's Dr. Leslie D. Stewart expressed their enthusiasm for establishing this new center for world-class pediatric medical research in Georgia. She cited the opportunities for collaboration with partners such as Georgia Tech as one of the main reasons for choosing Atlanta as their location.

The new facility, called the Shriners Children's Research Institute, will serve as an innovation hub for advancing children's healthcare. According to Vice President of Research Programs Dr. Marc Lalande, their partnership with biomedical engineers and scientists from Georgia Tech and Emory University will accelerate discovery and lead to new treatments and therapies.

The institute will be located in Science Square Labs near Georgia Tech's North Avenue Research Area. Shriners Children's will be recruiting talent from various research fields, including cell and gene therapies, robotics, artificial intelligence, medical devices, biologics, and data informatics. The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Global Commerce team played a crucial role in bringing this project to Georgia. Project Director Jane Caraway worked closely with partners such as Invest Atlanta, Select Fulton, Metro Atlanta Chamber, University System of Georgia, and Georgia Power to make this happen.

GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson expressed his satisfaction with this investment, stating that Shriners Children's is exactly the kind of organization they strive to attract – one that gives back to the community while creating high-quality jobs and strengthening Georgia's growing life sciences ecosystem.
