Governor Abbott Announces $200 Million Grant For Electric Reliability In Southeast Texas
TelAve News/10898784
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF) will be providing a grant to enhance electric reliability for over 538,000 customers of Entergy Texas in Southeast Texas. This grant will support various projects undertaken by Entergy Texas to strengthen power lines, upgrade utility poles, and protect electric equipment from severe weather and flooding.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of reliable electricity for all Texans, regardless of their location. He stated that these grants will not only benefit families and businesses but also schools and hospitals in Southeast Texas. He also expressed his commitment to building a stronger and more dependable electric grid for the entire state.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Chairman Thomas Gleeson also praised the TxEF Outside-ERCOT Grant Program for its contribution towards improving electric reliability across the state. He highlighted how these projects will strengthen critical power equipment, reduce storm-related outages, and facilitate quicker restoration of power during severe weather events. Chairman Gleeson noted that this investment aligns with the vision of Texan voters when they created the TxEF.

Entergy Texas CEO Eliecer Viamontes echoed similar sentiments, stating that they are working closely with state leadership to expedite crucial grid upgrades to better withstand extreme weather conditions. He also mentioned that these improvements would have no impact on customer bills, making it a significant win for families, businesses, and communities in Southeast Texas.
The $200 million grant will fund two projects aimed at enhancing reliability and resiliency throughout Entergy Texas' service territory. This includes portions of Chambers, Grimes, Hardin, Jefferson, Liberty, Montgomery, Orange, and Walker counties. The first project involves strengthening over 400 miles of transmission and distribution lines and upgrading more than 9,000 structures in the electric system. This includes replacing vulnerable utility poles that are prone to damage during major storms. These upgrades are expected to reduce outages and shorten power restoration times.
The second project focuses on strengthening five substations to withstand flooding and severe weather, ensuring they remain operational during extreme events. The PUCT administers the TxEF Outside ERCOT Grant Program, which aims to improve electric reliability and resiliency for Texans served by electric utilities outside the ERCOT region. More information about this program and others offered by TxEF can be found on the PUCT's website.
