Governor Abbott Announces $5 Million In Grants For Psychiatry Fellowships To Advance Mental Healthcare Education Across Texas
TelAve News/10891486
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the state of Texas will be providing $5 million in grants for the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program. This initiative aims to expand mental healthcare support across the state and develop the next generation of healthcare leaders.
Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to increasing access to mental healthcare in Texas, stating, "Texas remains steadfast in increasing access to mental healthcare across our state." He also thanked the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for their efforts in expanding and improving mental health services for all communities in Texas.
The grant funding will be distributed among nine medical training centers in Texas. These institutions will use the funds to develop, expand, or administer accredited one-year forensic psychiatry fellowship programs. The goal is to better serve Texans in different regions of the state and make Texas a national leader in forensic psychiatry.

Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser also emphasized the importance of this grant funding, stating, "All nine recipients highlighted innovative programs and strong collaboration with other institutions in their grant applications." This demonstrates a shared commitment to improving mental health services in Texas.
Forensic psychiatry is a subspecialty that applies psychiatric expertise in legal proceedings such as civil, criminal, and administrative cases. It includes evaluations, treatment, and research related to safety and risk mitigation. The grants will support licensed physicians pursuing specialization in this field, ultimately increasing access to critical mental health services for individuals involved in legal proceedings.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) will administer these grants according to Governor Abbott's vision of boosting access and funding for mental healthcare across the state. This funding will not only strengthen Texas' physician workforce but also provide advanced training opportunities for licensed physicians pursuing careers in forensic psychiatry.
