Governor Abbott Announces Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund Grant To Schunk Xycarb Technology
TelAve News/10899106
~ In a move to further solidify Texas' position as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing, Governor Greg Abbott announced today that Schunk Xycarb Technology Inc. (Xycarb) will receive a $3.9 million grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF). This grant will support the expansion of Xycarb's production facility in Georgetown, which is expected to create 25 new jobs and bring in over $42 million in capital investment.
Governor Abbott expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating that "Texas is the premier manufacturing powerhouse of the country." He believes that this expansion will not only strengthen an essential supply chain for semiconductor manufacturers in Texas but also create more high-skilled jobs in the region. He added that attracting new investments from industry leaders like Xycarb will expand economic opportunities for hardworking Texans and advance Texas' leadership in semiconductor manufacturing.

Xycarb, a part of the global Schunk Xycarb Group, specializes in manufacturing and refurbishing silicon carbide coated graphite, quartz, ceramic, and silicon components used in semiconductor wafer processing. The company plans to double its square footage, increase production and cleanroom space, and add further automation capabilities with this expansion.
President of Xycarb Ulrich von Hülsen emphasized the importance of building an ecosystem of technology companies supporting leading fabs (semiconductor fabrication facilities) in the United States. He believes that this TSIF award not only expands their production and engineering facilities but also reaffirms Texas' position as a key region for specialized companies providing sustainable economic growth for the national semiconductor industry.
Senator Charles Schwertner also praised this expansion as it aligns with their vision for strategic growth in communities. He stated that "high-quality jobs, long-term investments, and stronger domestic production capabilities are a win for our workforce, our local economy, and the future of technology manufacturing in Texas."

The TSIF grant is made possible by the Texas CHIPS Act, which was signed into law by Governor Abbott in 2023. This act established the TSIF and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium (TSIC) to continue Texas' leadership in semiconductor research, design, and manufacturing. These programs, administered by the Texas CHIPS Office, aim to leverage Texas' investments in the semiconductor industry, encourage companies to expand in the state, develop expertise and capacity in Texas institutions of higher education, and maintain the state's position as the nation's leader in semiconductor manufacturing.
