Governor Abbott Appoints Five To Texas Animal Health Commission

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Ben Scholz and reappointed Jimmie Ruth Evans, Barret J. Klein, Joe Leathers, and Thomas "Tommy" Oates to the Texas Animal Health Commission. Their terms are set to expire on September 6, 2031.
The Texas Animal Health Commission is responsible for safeguarding and improving the health of animal populations throughout the state. With their extensive experience and expertise in the agricultural industry, these individuals are well-equipped to serve on the commission.
Ben Scholz is the owner and operator of B. Scholz Farms. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the commission as a board member and past chairman for the Texas Wheat Producers Board. He also serves as secretary and treasurer of the National Wheat Foundation. In addition, Scholz holds leadership positions in various organizations such as president of the Collin County Farm Bureau and chairman of the Collin County Soil and Water Conservation District. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agri-Business from East Texas A&M University.

Jimmie Ruth Evans, a rancher and partner at Wittenburg Ranch in San Antonio, has been reappointed to the commission. She is a highly respected member of her community and has served as president of the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Evans is also an honorary chair for the Young Women's Leadership Academy and a past president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Texas Tech University.
Barret J. Klein, owner of Klein Farms and Klein Smoked Meats LLC in Boerne, is another familiar face on the commission as he has been reappointed by Governor Abbott. Klein is an active member of various associations including the Texas Pork Producers Association, National Spotted Swine Association, International Brangus Breeders Association, and Texas Brangus Breeders Association. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Texas A&M University.

Joe Leathers, president of operations at 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, has also been reappointed to the commission. He brings a wealth of experience to the table as a member of the board of directors for the Texas Southwest Cattle Raisers Association and U.S. CattleTrace, Inc. Leathers is also a member of the executive committee for the Texas Southwest Cattle Raisers Association and serves on the board for the National Ranching Heritage Associations. He attended Clarendon College.
Lastly, Thomas "Tommy" Oates, a rancher and former owner of Huntsville Livestock, has been appointed to the commission by Governor Abbott. Oates is a former president of the Exotic Wildlife Association and holds a degree from Sam Houston State University.
