DENVER ~ Denver, CO - As the academic year comes to a close, Coloradans are gearing up to celebrate Decision Day 2026. This annual event, observed nationally on May 1st, recognizes high school seniors and other learners as they make their final decisions about their postsecondary plans.
Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) are proud to support this initiative and encourage students to reach their full potential by pursuing higher education or other career pathways. "Colorado is the best state to live, work, start a business, and build your skills," said Governor Polis. "I am excited for students as they start the next step in their careers. Colorado is home to some of the best colleges and universities in the nation."
Decision Day is a milestone moment for students as they commit to colleges, universities, workforce training programs, apprenticeships or military service. Across Colorado, schools, colleges, community organizations and families are coming together to honor students for their perseverance and celebrate the many pathways that lead to meaningful careers and economic opportunity.

Executive Director JB Holston emphasized that Decision Day is about celebrating choice and possibility. "Whether a student is enrolling in a two- or four-year institution, pursuing a credential or apprenticeship, or entering the workforce or military, each pathway represents an important step toward their goals and Colorado's future," he said.
The state's postsecondary landscape offers over 250 opportunities across public colleges and universities based on offerings from CDHE, Colorado Community College System and Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. In addition to traditional degree programs, there are also short-term credentials, career and technical education programs, and work-based learning opportunities available to meet the evolving needs of students and employers.
To show support for Decision Day participants, CDHE encourages students to wear apparel representing their chosen path and participate in school or community celebrations. They can also share their plans on social media using hashtags such as #DecisionDayCO, #iDecided, and #DecisionDay26. Supporters can join in by posting photos on various platforms and tagging @CoHigherEd.
