Governor Polis Signs Bills into Law Investing In and Supporting Higher Education in Colorado

BOULDER ~ Boulder, CO - In a move to support higher education and Colorado students pursuing advanced degrees, Governor Polis signed a series of bills into law today.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Polis expressed his gratitude to the sponsors of these bills for their efforts in elevating the standard of education in Colorado. He emphasized the importance of providing students with the necessary resources to succeed at every level of their educational journey, whether it be through traditional universities or apprenticeships and skills-based learning opportunities.

One of the bills signed by Governor Polis was HB26-1006, also known as the Thriving Institution Designations for Higher Education. This law, sponsored by Representatives Elizabeth Velasco and Mathew Martinez, along with Senator Dylan Roberts, aims to recognize institutions of higher education that go above and beyond in supporting Colorado students.

Another bill signed was HB26-1016, which extends the Open Educational Resources Grant program for Colorado students. This program, sponsored by Representatives Jacque Phillips and Rick Taggart, as well as Senators Lisa Frizell and Judy Amabile, provides free online teaching and learning materials for students, instructors, and self-learners.

The third bill signed by Governor Polis was HB26-1078 - Off-Campus Courses & Concurrent Enrollment Programs. This law creates more opportunities for high school students to take courses from institutions of higher education in the state. It was sponsored by Representatives Leslie Smith and Eliza Hamrick, along with Senators Janice Marchman and Barbara Kirkmeyer.

The signing ceremony took place in front of the iconic Flatirons with bill sponsors and advocates joining Governor Polis. With these new laws in place, Colorado is taking significant steps towards providing its students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for successful careers.
